Ships of Discovery:
about us

Denise C. Lakey

has concentrated on scouring Spanish archives for documents useful to specific archaeological projects. Having examined and acquired copies of thousands of documents since 1982, Denise labors to make these ancient artifacts accessible to other researchers. She has cataloged thousands of historic documents pertaining to seafaring—bills of lading, insurance contracts, expense accounts, shipwreck inquiries, ship registers, loan agreements, legal inquiries, and lawsuits.

"I became involved in underwater archaeology in 1980 when I was looking for something interesting to do with my life. Unencumbered by family or debt, I set out on a great adventure. I now have small family and a big debt, but I still find archaeology a fascinating occupation. My love of archaeology comes from my love of history: the stories of those who came before us. Archaeology and history are just two means of exploring those stories. My greatest contribution to archaeology is my ability—or better, my willingness—to deal with ancient loan agreements, lawsuits, and insurance contracts."
"My Mom helps people. She helps them save their old books."
My son Travis
